Note - 1890 British Ultimatum

In 1890 the Portuguese were attempt to claim lands that would connect their south-west African colony (Angola) to their south-east African colony (Mozambique). The British at the same time were attempting to build a corridor north from South Africa through the same territory. In January 1890 the British issued an ultimatum against the Portuguese, demanding that they withdraw. In the end, the Portuguese conceded. Learn more about the British Ultimatum of 1890.
