Black Republic of Letters

Note - Arthur Bowler

Arthur Bowler was a Haitian lawyer who lived in Paris in the early 1880s. He was one of the co-authors of the influential book Les Détracteurs de la race noire et de la République d'Haïti. In 1890 he was back in Haiti working to establish a Haitian newspaper in Paris. His own paper, Haïti en Europe, appeared in 1891, but Benito Sylvain insisted that he suspend its operations, since there was not enough market for two Haitian newspapers in the city.
