Note - Haitian Concordat with the Vatican (1860)

In 1860, Haiti's president Fabre Geffrard signed a concordat with the Vatican. The Holy See had not formally recognized Haitian independence after the Revolution. This agreement made Catholicism Haiti's state religion and normalized relations between the country and the Catholic Church. Geffrard also persecuted Vodou practitioners in the country.
