Note – Môle Saint-Nicholas

The bay of Môle-Saint-Nicholas in Northern Haiti was a point of conflict between the country and the United States in the 1890s. The US wanted to lease the bay for a naval base. The perceive affront to Haitian sovereignty cause a scandal in Haitian public opinion. Ultimately the United States secured Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for the same purpose and gave up its attempt on Môle-Saint-Nicholas. Learn more about Môle-Saint-Nicholas.
