He was the brother of Benito Sylvain. He famously contributed to the development of Haitian literature in 1901 by publishing the first major work using Haitian Creole, Cric? Crac!, a collection of fables. He opposed the U.S. Occupation of Haiti which began in 1915, but died in 1925 before he could see the occupation come to end.
