He was the brother of Benito Sylvain. He served as the Haitian minister to France. In 1901, he contributed significantly to the development of Haitian literature by publishing the first major work using Haitian Creole, Cric? Crac!, a collection of fables. He opposed the U.S. Occupation of Haiti which began in 1915, but died in 1925 before he could see the occupation come to end.
