Even at its height, spiritualism was not popular within the ghost story genre; it was usually disregarded as folly (Bann 664). “The Moonlit Road” takes a more serious, “believable” approach. The medium Bayrolles appeared previously in Bierce’s story “An Inhabitant of Carcosa”.
