A classical allusion to Greek and Roman mythology, Furies were female spirits of the underworld. Often depicted as “formidable beings ... carrying torches ... and generally wreathed with serpents,” they were known for seeking vengeance against those whom had deviated from the path of morality and intentionally taken part in misdeeds against one’s own kin.
