Victorian Ghosts, 1852-1907: EN 4573 Collection

LeFanu.[Z.A]-12

To look at someone with an askance look, is to look at them with what we now call suspicion. It’s another way of saying suspiciously but a better synonym would be, askance is looking at someone Scornfully. It could also mean looking at someone with a side glance, either way, it is clear that caution is being used. This makes complete sense in this point of the story as Mr. Jennings is being followed by this ‘monkey’ and is unaware if it real or not, all he knows is that this is a peculiar situation, and so he is doubtful for what might happen next. “Askance.” Merriam-Webster, Merriam-Webster, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/askance .
