Catherine Hall highlights that Thomas Babington Macaulay's literary essays aided in his acquisition of entry into the House of Commons in her article, "Macaulay's Nation” in which she writes, "In the early 1820s his experience at the Bar was unexceptional, while his first literary essays for the Edinburgh Review took the reading public by storm and made him a young literary lion. His brilliant polemics against the dangerously democratic tendencies of the Utilitarians earned him Whig enthusiasm and his entry into the House of Commons in 1830." (508)
