Black Republic of Letters

Miscellany

The abundance of material obliges us to defer the publication of a beautiful letter that the Anti-Slavery Congress suggested to our eminent collaborator, Arnould Rogier.

Let's Make the Chain

An interesting volume of fairy tales, short stories and narratives has just appeared under this title, published for the benefit of the victims in the French Antilles and Saint-Etienne. It is Mr. Philibert Audebrand who had the idea. Twenty authors, among them Messrs. Jules Simon—always first up when it comes to charitable works—Ludovic Halévy, François Coppée, de Boisgobëy, Paul Bourget, Madame Adam, joined with him to throw together a work that might be sold quickly.

A fin de siècle Advertisement

One of the great Paris wine houses, Les Grandes Caves Populaires (36 Boulevard Sébastopol) recently had the idea of offering its clients a daily bonus of one hundred francs... You read that right, one hundred francs in hard cash.

The bonus is represented by a voucher payable on presentation, contained in a hollowed out cork that looks just like all the others. Every day, a litre thus corked will be sold in one or other of the main stores.

As it happens, the lucky devil who, each morning, finds the large sum by opening the precious bottle, will be able to say that he is enjoying a generous wine.

The Disappearance of a Young Naval Officer

The personnel of the French Navy is very disheartened over the mysterious disappearance of a young sub-lieutenant, Mr. Ungerer, reputed among his peers as a man of duty and a model officer. He disembarked on Saturday 20 September, according to a regular leave, and headed off toward Saint-Anne d'Auray, which he intended to visit. Since then, he has not reappeared. Inquiries and searches have been in vain.

Ugliness Contest

An English newspaper, the Tourbillon, recently organized an ugliness contest.

The paper's subscribers acted as judges.

A journalist, Mr. Oscar Browning, won first prize; this worthy fellow refused it with indignation.

An Intrepid Saviour

from the Figaro:

Last Thursday, around five o'clock, a horse harnessed to a carriage bearing two ladies and two children was racing along Avenue Bugeaud, and a catastrophe was imminent, when a passerby, a man of sixty years, though singularly vigorous, threw himself onto the bridle and the horses nostrils. He was nearly squeezed between one of the shafts and one of the Avenue's trees, but he did not give up and succeeded in stopping the animal.

The witnesses wanted to know the name of this courageous citizen, who was taken to a neighbouring house for the treatment of  some minor injuries.

They learned that the old man was none other than Mr. Arnould Rogier, actually secretary general of the Rescue Workers of the Seine, who is up to his fifteenth rescue.

Mr. Rogier escaped as quickly as possible from the ovation that would have been given to him.

The Fraternité is happy to relate this lovely fact. Such an act of courage is not surprising to anyone who knowns Mr. Rogier, and we address our deepest congratulations to our eminent and worthy collaborator.
