Design Stories: Exploring Everyday Things

The KE 860 Electric Kettle

Delve in and explore our findings of the 1960’s K40 kettle through looking at the many layers and complexities tied to this artefact. As three 4th-year Design students, we invite you to explore our findings which go beyond the physical makeup of the kettle, expanding into the context leading up to its creation up until its relevance today. Navigate with ease through the content from the timeline and be sure to check out the kettle model at the bottom of the pages. We have designed this exploration with shortcuts to links and further material of interest. We hope that you find as much excitement in these findings as we do. Take away from your exploration the effect simple objects like the kettle have in people's lives. Think of the life this artefact had, how it changed the perception of household items, its perceived prestige, or how it was relied upon simply for its function. The next time you come across what may appear to be a rubbish out of date household appliance, think of the life it may have had, after all we are a part of the story for today's objects.

Happy exploring,
Kesha An and Shayna
