Design Stories: Exploring Everyday Things

Life Cycle

This diagram aligns the year that C.G.E.’s model M7A mixer was found to be first advertised, to modern day. Emphasized is the longevity of this product range, its social significance, and familial worth. In Dannehl’s categorization of exceptional and utilitarian (or “humble”) objects, this mixer is an example of an exception: an object that “underwent [its] life cycle” and has not “disappeared” (2018, p. 175). Its survival is a testament of how C.G.E.’s mixer became to be more than a time-saving tool.
