The travels of Manuel Joseph

Manuel was a free Black born in Portugal between 1728 and 1730.

A portion of his travels around the Atlantic and Indian oceans are recorded in the French East India Company rôles.


L’Auguste (1750-1752):
A Manuel Joseph boarded the Auguste at Baie de Tous les Saints in Brazil in August/September 1751. He remained on board until disembarkation in Lorient (25 January 1752).
He is listed as a nègre. Wage: 25.

Mascarin (1752-1752):
A Manuel Antoine Joseph got on the Mascarin in Lorient (15 March 1752).
Got on the Comte d’Argenson (4 October 1752) with others before the Mascarin was condemned at Ile de France (31 October 1752).
He is listed as a 22-year-old sailor born in Portugal. Medium build, black hair. Noir libre. Wage: 17.

L’Utile (1753-1754):
A Manuel Joseph was on the whole voyage from Ile de France (11 August 1753) to Lorient (16 January 1754).
Listed as a sailor. Listed as previously on the Mascarin. Wage: 17.

Prince de Conti (1754-1756):
Manuel Joseph was on the entire voyage from Lorient (8 March 1754) back to A Coruña (8 October 1756).
He is listed as a 26-year-old sailor born in Port en Port. Medium build, black hair. Nègre libre. Wage: 20.

Duc d’Aquitaine (1755-1757):
A Manuel Joseph got on the Duc d’Aquitaine in Lisbon sometime between September 1756 and May 1757 until it was taken by the English (30 May 1757). Spent time in prison in Plymouth.
